Backfill Materials for Cathodic Protection Anodes
Designed to lower ground resistance and ensure long-term anode performance in varied soil conditions.
Optimizing Anode Performance with the Right Backfill
To maximize the effectiveness of buried anodes in cathodic protection systems, they are surrounded by specialized backfill materials. These materials help maintain moisture, lower earth resistance, and—depending on the type—may also participate in the electrochemical reactions.
CMP Europe offers a range of backfill options suited to different installation conditions and system requirements.
Backfill Options
- Calcined Petroleum Coke
A high-purity, conductive carbon backfill that offers low resistivity and long service life. It actively supports current discharge and is ideal for deep or horizontal anode beds in soil and water environments.
- Metallurgical Coke
A more economical alternative to calcined coke, this reactive carbon material is used where moderate performance is acceptable and cost-efficiency is a priority. Best for shallow installations or less aggressive environments.
- Bentonite
An inert, clay-based backfill that swells when moist, ensuring stable contact around the anode. It does not participate in electrochemical reactions and is often used in high-resistivity soils to maintain low resistance through moisture retention.
Comparison Table
| Feature | Calcined Petroleum Coke | Metallurgical Coke | Bentonite Clay |

| Moisture Retention | Moderate | Moderate | High |
| Electrochemical Activity | Active | Active | None |
| Typical Use | Deep/long-life systems | Cost-sensitive installs | High-resistivity soils |
| Cost | Higher | Moderate | Low |
Applications:
Deep Anode Beds | Horizontal Installations | High-Resistivity Soils | Coastal Zones | Tank Farms
